After hours of waiting for my McDelivery, the delivery person finally arrived at my door — only to apologize and inform me that he had delivered my order to someone else by mistake already.

Fortunately, he had brought the other customer's order with him, hence we could work out a solution. As it turned out, the two orders were almost identical, with just two differences that (1) I had ordered a large Coca-Cola, whereas the other customer had ordered a medium; (2) The other customer had ordered ten packets of ketchup whereas I had ordered no ketchup.

The other customer had noticed the mix-up, kept my order sealed, reported the mistake to the delivery person, and waited for the matter to be resolved. It was reassuring that mine had remained untouched.

I suggested that I pay the other customer the price difference and simply keep his. The real surprise came when I discovered that the difference amounted to a whopping 49.50, even though the two orders were almost identical. The explanation was simple, I had ordered a combo whereas he had ordered the items a la carte.

Given this unexpectedly large difference, I proposed another solution that I would like to refuse the delivery and request a refund. The delivery person, however, was not particularly happy to proceed that way as he was concerned that it might result in a negative record which is harmful to him. From my perspective, though, the situation was hardly ideal either. I had already waited for hours and still hadn't received the meal I had ordered and the prospect of refusing the delivery and starting over seemed just ridiculous.

Eventually, the delivery person came up with an alternative: I could keep the other customer's order, and he would find a way to make things right with him.

I agreed. And yes, what that off-the-books arrangement actually entailed remained a mystery to me.

McDelivery threw an unexpected exception involving two nearly identical McDonald's orders. Fortunately, the execution eventually resumed, and I got to enjoy my meal.

Looking back, the clues were all there. The vanity phone number ending in 1111, the refusal to be settled with a preset combo meal and the precise request for exactly ten ketchup packets. My mysterious neighbor was clearly someone who insists on a completely bespoke and zero compromised life, including a strict personal code that meant keeping my order pristine and untouched until the delivery person sorted it out.
